TechRadar reckons Panasonic have a mid-range winner on their hands with the TX40HX800B. Even though it can't quite reproduce the blackest blacks of OLED competitors it has a cinematic screen that can handle a wide colour range. Dolby Vision is a real plus too. It's also perfect for gamers due to its low input lag. However, it’s not the brightest set out there (though certainly not the dimmest) and it only has 3 HDMI inputs.
What Hi-Fi also liked this TV but felt it suffered some common problems of TVs in this price bracket including basic sound quality (though it is very clear), a bit of motion blur and a picture that "lacks nuance". However, the vibrant picture and HDR support were still good enough to win it 4 stars.
Trusted Reviews thought the TX40Hx800B was the perfect mid-range set for a cinematic experience. good colour range, detail and HDR set it apart from other mid-market models. It’s also pretty speedy making it excellent for gamers. However, as it is edge-lit it can't reach the darkest blacks of OLED competitors and Disney+ isn't available on its software.

A good performer overall
The first thing I noticed when I took the various parts out of the box, was how good the build quality is on Panasonic TVs when compared to a LG. Not flimsy at all. The assembly of the stand was straightforward too. The picture quality out of the box on SD channels is a little soft, but if you spend a bit of time going through options on the menu you can get it much better. However, the picture quality on the HD channels is very clean and crisp. Very nice local contrast indeed. The sound is a fraction on the tinny side, though much better than some I've listened too, but if you prefer a rich sound I'd recommend getting a good soundbar. I'm still learning how to use some of it's smart features, but the addition of the Freeview Play on this set is great. If you're a fan of Panasonic TVs, you shouldn't be disappointed with this one!
Amazing improvement on my previous panasonic TV
Now realise what I have been missing.
Panasonic TX-40HX800B delivery
Due to space considerations the largest TV I could accommodate was 40". I also wanted a 4K screen as I have a growing library of 4K DVDs. After a lot of research the Panasonic TX-40HX800B met all of my requirements - but nobody had one in stock, Richer Sounds said they were delivery before Xmas. It was dually delivered before Xmas and I am highly with the TV and Richer Sounds delivery. The only downside is that I think it is £50 too expensive - but if you want the best you have to pay for itr.
Very easy setup Disappointing view angle
Our first move to a smart TV - and so glad we have!Colour and clarity goodOnly flaw is the viewing angle - less than 45 degrees from 'straight-on' loses colour rapidly
A 'small screen' gem!
I was looking to upgrade an old Sony 32 inch TV without resorting to a hideous monstrosity which dominates the room. It is increasingly difficult to find picture and sound quality together with a decent features list at a modest size. This 40 inch Panasonic is only a few centimetres larger than my previous TV yet gives a much larger viewing size. After two weeks, I am very happy with the picture and sound quality which, with a new Denon soundbar and Bluetooth sub-woofer, gives me a very decent home theatre experience. No, it won't rival the quality found in huge (and far more expensive) TVs but I would recommend this one as a worthwhile investment and good value to anyone looking for a 'smaller' screen TV.
Amazing - once you have put the effort in to tweak
The default TV speakers are okay as far as TV speakers go - but I turn them off and use the optical output to my Dolby Digital Sony amp. That all works well with no lag on any input or app.
Perfect size for Victorian terraced house
We settled on this 40" set having decided a larger screen would swamp the living room of our Victorian terraced house. It's proved the right decision. The tv sits atop a vintage trolley and can be wheeled into position with ease. (Not an option for 43" plus screens.) A larger screen could have been bought for less than the price of this Panasonic, but the 4k picture quality and the depth of sound justify the cost of this model. Very helpful sales team, so joy all round.
