DPReview rated the Nikon D3500 as middle of the road in everything from build quality to performance but felt that it had a lot to recommend itself to first time DSLR users. File transfer was slow and it's not quite as simple to point and shoot as it would be using your smartphone. It has a handy inbuilt guide-mode that makes the learning curve a little less steep. A dependable choice for newbies.

Digital Camera World similarly commended the D3500 to first time users. They forgave the fact that it does not improve greatly on previous models, its lack of 4K. Its value for money and the ease of use for beginners earned it 4 stars.

The fixed rear screen and lack of 4k aside, Trusted Reviews agreed that this is a solid camera and has quality that goes well beyond its low price.

A great price for a great product, often referred to as an entry-level camera, but interms of features and functionality far from it. It does have in built tutorials that talk you through the process of the type of photo you are trying to take, so entry in that sense, but that's all. It's light, compact enough for travel, non Nikon lens are not daft, an picture quality is excellent. You can shoot RAW so you can get involved in post production too. I love it, I cannot see sense in paying more.

Awesome little DSLR. Picture quality is superb and comparible with higher level cameras thanks to the excellent sensor. Suprisingly good at low light for its class. Do not recommend for video due to the mono microphone, but does the job if you need it. The autofocus and the low burst speed are not the best for sports and action photography, but they are not bad and the AF is accurate. The best DSLR for the money. The grip is very comfortable and there are plenty of cheap lenses for it.
