Nicholas Soames has refused to apologise for going a bit Malcolm Tucker last Tuesday on Adam Afriyie. As fellow MPs looked on, the grandson of Winston Churchill went ballistic in the Commons Tea Room, lambasting Afriyie for his proposed EU referendum in 2014:
You are a chateau bottled nuclear powered ****. You are totally f***ing disloyal, a f***ing disgrace to your party, your fellow MPs, your Prime Minister and your country.
Disgrace is a strong word, especially from the man that Women In Parliament described as “the most sexist” MP, and Adam tried to diffuse the situation:
Adam: If you want to have a serious discussion, Nicholas, then I am prepared to do so. But this is not the way to go about it.
Tory Whip Amber Rudd: This is not doing any good for anyone.
Soames: This is nothing more than a grotesque f***ing vanity project to promote your absurd f***ing campaign to become party leader. You aren’t up to it, man!
A Tory MP who witnessed the event said:
Nick’s barrack room language was over the top but the vast majority of us agree with him. Adam is being totally reckless and is in danger of becoming a pariah among his colleagues. It is totally impractical to have a referendum next year.
Despite this incident, an awful performance on question time, and more than 140 of the 147 new 2010 Tory MPs signing a letter asking him to pipe down, Afriyie is determined to force an EU vote as soon as 8th November.
General note: If 140 people in your office write to you asking you not to do something, and you do it, you probably are a chateau bottled nuclear powered ****.
