Not all of us were born with long curly eyelashes, but neither do you need to spend a fortune to get the perfect doe-eyed, glamorous look. Many of us follow a daily routine to enhance our appearance and the eyelash curler is a simple, effective tool for making your eyes pop. Whether you’re getting ready for a date or simply running for the bus, this is one make-up tool you should always have in your bag.
When looking for the perfect eyelash curler there are many different aspects to consider; does the curler fit my eyebrow shape? Will replacement pads be provided? Does it have an easy grip? Will it pull out or break my eyelashes? What sort of look am I trying to achieve? And of course how much will it cost me?
There are several different eyelash curlers on the market so understanding the differences in models to suit your eyelash needs is a must, and the price can vary greatly depending on their performance and design. You ideally want one with replaceable pads as they do get worn out and gunky over time and some brands do require you to replace the entire unit. Plastic and standard metal eyelash curlers tend to be the most popular using a basic clamping mechanism but heated curlers are on the rise, working similar to a mascara brush. We have also covered some more convenient smaller options, which have become a popular choice for the jet-setter and space savers out there.
All of these factors have been considered when selecting our list in the hopes you’ll find the right curler that won’t make your eyes, or wallets, wince!
Best Mechanical Eyelash Curlers
Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler
Most make-up artists will say the Shu Uemura is a staple in their bag. This lightweight curler is simple to use and small in size. The upgraded, deep-curved silicone pad, in a new ‘mushroom shape’, provides a stay-put edge and when used correctly is good for women with short or delicate lashes as the new shape also allows even the shortest of lashes to be grasped in its squeeze. The silicone pads also mean the curl created is soft, not creating any sharp and stiff edges. Upgraded hinges on the clamp also provide a protective hold and help define eyes with minimal effort or pressure.
This curler has won multiple awards for its stainless steel applicator and ergonomic handles, which help ensure stability and control when using. It’s curved angle suits all eye shapes making it a no-brainer for those new to curling or not sure of their eye shape.
Some users say they don’t even have to apply mascara before use which is a huge perk and must for those who need a quick lift in the morning, with little time to spare. This curler comes with one pad refill.
AMTOK Eyelash Curler
The Amtok Eyelash curler comes in an eye-catching rose gold version, making it a very on-trend item in your makeup bag. The handle is comfortable to hold and the curler shape helps create long, seductive lashes.
This curler also boasts of an ergonomically designed contour, fitting universal eye shapes and providing a strong squeeze without pinching and pulling out eyelashes. Its soft rubber silicone pads also provide a comfortable barrier when clamping lashes.
As a bonus, it comes with a pack of 4 extra cushion pads, which are soft and durable and we thought this was extremely generous for the price. As you should change the pads every couple of months, you won’t have to worry about purchasing any extra pads for at least a year.
The Shiseido curler is a cult favorite and curls lashes for an effortlessly luxurious look. It has a great curve shape and very soft rubber pad ensuring you get a good lift, without kinking eye-lashes in the process.
The model is also light to hold and feels less ‘clunky’ than some older models out there. This is Shiseido’s best-selling eyelash curler and is suitable for even the straightest, most stubborn eyelashes out there.
A broad curve of the pad also ensures all lashes are curled from inner to outer corners so you can expect no crimping or bunching action during use. The edge-free design prevents eyelashes from pinching reaching even the smallest lashes. If you’re new to curling and want to try it out without emptying your wallet, this is a good choice.
We would recommend buying more rubber replacements for these curlers, as it only includes one replacement rubber pad with it.
Revlon Eyelash Curler
If you want a trusted product, at a bargain price, the Revlon eyelash curler is your go-to. It boasts of a non-slip grip making it comfortable for your fingers to hold and its contoured design is easy for curling beautifully shaped upswept lashes.
This is the cheapest, no-frills eyelash curler on our list. It’s an old school curler, but speak to loyal fans and they are still using this same curler after years.
Two cushion curl pads are also provided as part of the kit really making it the value-for-money option.
Kevyn Aucoin The Eyelash Curler
The priciest mechanical curler on our list – but well worth the splurge – this slim, professional curler offers a sleek, stainless steel frame allowing for a firm grip during use. The curler opens a lot wider than some other curlers and it’s curved at an angle suiting all eye shapes comfortably. The silicone rubber pad releases the right amount of pressure to curl lashes and combined with a basic mascara, you can expect lashes to stay curled all day.
You’ll need to stock up on your own pad refills as this curler doesn’t come with any extra spares but if you have big eyes and a few extra pounds in your pocket, you might want to invest in this curler.
Travel Eyelash Curlers
Laura Mercier Eyelash Curler
If you like to consider yourself a jet-setter or need a more portable curler, the Laura Mercier Eyelash Curler is a must-have in your makeup kit. This curler creates a dramatic lift and reaches the tiniest of lashes. The cushiony pad adds lasting curl, creating an awakening wide-eyed effect.
This curler comes in a clever compact shape, which is really its biggest selling point and though the rectangular design is drastically different than traditional types of curlers, these travel curlers work by clamping lashes just like any standard curler.
The easel-style handle flips down to provide the appropriate amount of pressure so you don’t have to worry about unsteady hands. Once you are happy with the desired curl, all you have to do is flip the handle up into a locked position. As you will notice, this curler lacks finger grips, which are often present when handling the scissor-like clamp on mechanical curlers. This doesn’t seem to be a problem from our research but the difference in design can be awkward for first time users.
If you are looking for a pocket-size option, that doesn’t take up too much space in your makeup bag, this is worth considering.
This product also contains one replacement pad at the base, recessed into the bottom of the curler itself and is a great space-saver in a cramped makeup bag.
Tweezerman Curl and Go Curler
The well-trusted Tweezerman brand has come out with this innovative mini curler, which is a portable version of their classic lash curler design. The rounded, non-stick pads are non-latex which makes them hypoallergenic, and the silicone pads are thick and rounded protecting lashes from cutting or damaging during use.
This travel friendly curler creates naturally beautiful, long-lasting curls and its folding handles provide maximum control over clamping. Once you get the hang of holding and assembling the curler correctly, it’s a great compact, portable travel tool that can be stored or carried anywhere. Coming in a very ‘pretty in pink’ exterior, it’s easily recognizable in any crowded makeup bag.
Three replacement pads are included.
Heated Eyelash Curlers
The Blinc Heated Eyelash Curler
A secret makeup artist’s trick is to use a hairdryer to warm up lash curls to help ‘set’ the lash for longer. The Blinc Heater Eyelash curler is inspired by this trick and has incorporated it into its design.
Five seconds is all you need to curl your lashes with this heated wand, making it just as quick a process as the manual curlers out there. Instead of clamping a curl into lashes like you may traditionally do, hold the heated wand against lashes and push them back into the curl and shape you want. The effect is a more customizable lash shape and some may argue that nothing is better than applying a little heat to set a long lasting curl.
The wand delivers the precise amount of heat needed, while making it easy for you to handle even the tiniest of lashes. The heat emitted from the wand is enough to allow lashes to conform to the guided shape. The only downfall we could find is that one AAA battery is required, although one is included in the pack to start you off.
You can create beautiful curly lashes, without the need for mascara with this wand which is a particular bonus for getting some sun by the pool, but remember as soon as they get wet, they’ll go ‘natural’ again.
If you have hard to curl or stubborn lashes or want your curl to last all day, a heated curler might be the perfect solution for you.
EZGO Professional USB Portable Eyelash Curler
The most innovative eyelash curler on our list is the EZGO Professional USB Portable Eyelash curler. Its rechargeable feature is a great addition to the product meaning you won’t have to keep sourcing batteries every time it runs out and is our ‘tech savvy’ pick on the list.
This heated curler has a U disk design making it small and easy to operate. The heated area of the wand is oriented to keep enough distance from your skin reducing fearful scenarios of burning your lids.
A carbon ceramic wand is a great selling point, keeping the curler at a constant temperature of 80℃ to 85℃ (176℉ to185℉), and allowing for a professional curl result within seconds.
The USB slot is protected by a white plastic lid, and at the other end of the wand, a clear white plastic lid protects the curler itself. Once you are ready to use, all you have to do is turn on a power button, wait 60 seconds for normal mode or preheat for 20 seconds in rapid mode, and start curling. Don’t forget to remove the protective clear body cover once heated before use.
A simple technique of brushing upwards, while keeping lashes in contact with the heated comb for about 3 seconds is all that is needed to achieve the desired look.
The built-in rechargeable lithium polymer battery takes 15-20 minutes to achieve a full charge. A green display lamp will let you know once it’s fully charged and when the power button is turned on you can expect an LED blue light to appear.
The battery can be used for up to 30-35 minutes meaning you won’t need to charge every use but USB charging means it can charge from several devices such as your car or computer to get more juice on the go.
No additional pads are needed as the heated rod does all the curling and a handy cleaning brush is included. We recommend combing away debris after each use to reduce build up.
