Alcatel Onetouch Pop Star 4G review

What is it?

A cheap and cheerful Android smartphone, the Pop Star 4G won’t rival the best phones on the market but for under $80 it offers a lot of very impressive features for a bargain price.

Who is it for?

The Alcatel Pop Star 4G is for people that scoff at the idea of spending $800 on a phone but still want a smartphone that will help them keep up with their lives. Running off the Android operating system the Pop Star means you can download all the apps you need.

What’s wrong with it?

When you spend less than $80 on a smartphone you know there’s going to be some compromises along the way. One of those is the Alcatel brand itself which, for label-conscious people, won’t carry much street cred.

The screen doesn’t have the best resolution so if you are used to using more expensive phones it won’t appear very sharp, but text is still easy to read and this won’t be a problem for the majority of people. The viewing angles of the screen are also not the best, but if you only use the phone directly in front of you – who doesn’t? – then that’s not a problem.

The phone can also feel a little slow when performing more demanding tasks (likely down to it only having 1GB of RAM) but it does have a reasonable processor for this price point (1.3GHz) so it will get there in the end.

It doesn’t run the very latest version of the Android operating system (it’s still on Lollipop) but this won’t be a major concern for 99% of users and it’s very unlikely you’d even notice.

Battery life

Battery life is also a little bit disappointing but there are so few phones where this isn’t the case that I wouldn’t say it’s considerably worse than the average smartphone

What’s right with it?

It’s got a good size 5-inch screen so you should have more than enough room to type easily, as well as surf the internet and play games.

It has a rear-facing 8MP camera which – while it won’t take professional quality photos – is more than enough for the average snap. There is also a pleasantly well specced 5MP front-facing camera for selfies and video calls.
